Redefining Nutrition for Inclusivity

March is National Nutrition Month, an annual campaign initiated 50 years ago in 1973 by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Throughout March, individuals are encouraged to explore the benefits balanced for mental health, physical health, and overall well-being. However, it is important to recognize that every person’s nutrition needs are unique, and there is no definitive definition of the word nutrition.

Welcome to "Redefining Nutrition," where we explore how to embrace diverse feeding methods and foster an inclusive approach to nourishment. In this blog post, we'll delve into the importance of recognizing and accommodating various feeding types, including feeding pump, breastfeeding, formula feeding, oral eating, and more.

Why Is “Redefining Nutrition” So Important?

Redefining nutrition is crucial because it shapes societal and personal understandings of food's impact on our lives, acknowledging that each person has unique dietary needs and preferences.  By redefining nutrition we can promote inclusivity, diversity, and personalized approaches to eating that honor and respect unique needs.

We reached out to our TubieTalk community and found that 67% of you have received hurtful comments about your feeding tube. Here are some examples of hurtful comments.

  • “Showing your feeding tube just seems like you’re looking for attention”

  • “Maybe if you didn’t use the tube they would eat.”

  • “I’d rather die than have to do that”

  • “The mom didn’t take care of herself while she was pregnant?”

  • “You are too young and you just need to try harder”

  • “What’s wrong with him?”

  • “Whatever is it, it's disgusting”- A mom answering her child who asked what the tube was.

  • “Its a shame she can’t taste this”

  • “That grosses me out so much. That’s why I am a teacher and not a doctor.”

  • “You look too sick with that thing”

  • “You’re faking being unwell for a parking pass”

Hurtful comments like these can come from a lack of knowledge and ignorance, which is why it is so important to spread awareness about different feeding types. By educating others about tube feeding, formula feeding, breast feeding, combination feeding, and more, we foster understanding and support. Spreading awareness contributes to creating a more understanding and inclusive society, where diverse nutritional needs are respected, supported, and celebrated.

Understanding Different Feeding Methods:

  • Feeding Pump: For individuals who require tube feeding or rely on a feeding pump for nutrition, understanding their unique needs is crucial. This may involve ensuring access to appropriate equipment and support services.

  • Breastfeeding: Breastfeeding offers numerous health benefits for both infants and mothers. Supporting breastfeeding mothers involves providing education, resources, and a supportive environment to facilitate successful breastfeeding experiences.

  • Formula Feeding: Formula feeding is a valid choice for many families, whether due to personal preference, medical reasons, or other circumstances. Offering non-judgmental support and access to accurate information on formula feeding is key.

  • Oral Eating: Individuals who primarily rely on oral intake may have specific dietary requirements or challenges.

Redefining Nutrition is not just about acknowledging the diversity of feeding methods, but also celebrating the unique journey for each individual. By embracing inclusivity, diversity, and personalized approaches to eating, we pave the way for a more understanding and supportive society where every feeding journey is honored and respected.

Let’s continue to spread awareness, educate others, and foster empathy towards individuals with diverse needs, not just for the rest of March but everyday. Together we can redefine nutrition and create a world where everyone feels valued and supported in their unique path to nourishment. Remember, every feeding journey is valid and every individual deserves to be celebrated.
